Claude Fable 5.1 Review of Cache Savings and Mythos Access

Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 launched together in early September. The two names can sound like performance tiers, but Anthropic says they use the same underlying model with different safeguards and access conditions. Fable 5.1 is generally available. Mythos 5.1 is limited to vetted cybersecurity and life-science organizations. This Claude Fable 5.1 review focuses on the capability and cost change that ordinary Claude and Claude Code users can actually use.
The 75 percent reduction applies to cache reads
The regular Claude Fable 5.1 pricing remains $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Cache reads fall to $0.25 per million tokens, which is 75 percent below Fable 5. The change matters for long Claude Code sessions because system instructions, repository files, and tool definitions can appear across many turns.
It does not reduce the entire bill by 75 percent. Anthropic estimates about a 25 percent reduction for typical workloads and as much as 45 percent for context-heavy agentic work, based on August 2026 usage. These are vendor measurements. Your result depends on the cache-hit rate. When an early prompt prefix changes repeatedly, the same context may return as full-price input.
Claude Code users reported cache regressions around the Fable 5.1 launch, and later client releases fixed several of them. The version of Claude Code can therefore change a real-world comparison. Update the client first, then inspect cache writes, cache reads, and uncached input in the cost report before comparing Fable 5 and 5.1.
Choose Fable unless you qualify for Mythos
Access conditions decide the choice for almost everyone. Fable 5.1 is available in Claude, Claude Code, the API, and major cloud platforms. Mythos 5.1 is provided to a small set of vetted professional organizations. Its pricing starts at the same $10 input and $50 output rates per million tokens.
Mythos uses more permissive safeguards for specialized cyber and life-science research. Fable's cyber safeguards are also more precise than the previous generation. Anthropic reports 60 percent fewer false positives for benign cybersecurity requests and now permits source-code vulnerability discovery, while exploit development and other risky work remain restricted.
An ordinary developer does not need to hunt for Mythos access. Use Fable 5.1 for coding, knowledge work, and routine vulnerability remediation. Mythos becomes relevant only when an eligible organization performs work that Fable's safeguards prevent.
Verify savings in long sessions
Build a small test set with three workload shapes. Include short questions, sustained changes to one repository, and long workflows with multiple agents or tools. Run each several times and record acceptance rate, total input, cache reads, cache writes, and total cost.
Keep the cacheable prefix stable. Put repository rules, tool definitions, and durable context early. Place changing logs and the current request later. Rewriting the prefix or changing reasoning configuration during a session can invalidate earlier cache work. If cache reads suddenly disappear, check the client version and session structure before deciding the model became more expensive.
Fable 5.1 can also run at lower effort. Anthropic says lower effort can reach Fable 5-level results at a lower cost on some tasks. Start at the lowest setting that meets the acceptance bar and raise it only for difficult jobs. That separates the cache-price improvement from extra reasoning consumption.
Verdict
Fable 5.1 has the clearest upgrade value in long-context, tool-heavy work. Cheap cache reads directly help multi-turn coding and agentic workflows. Short sessions still face the same $10 input and $50 output base rates, so their savings may be small.
Fable 5.1 is the right option for ordinary users. Update Claude Code, confirm that caching works, and compare the complete bill on real tasks. A 75 percent cache discount should never be treated as a 75 percent reduction in every workload.
